Ten questions, both directions

Play it as “name the capital” or flip it around and name the country from its capital — the second is noticeably harder. Narrow it to a single region if you are trying to learn one part of the world properly rather than testing what you already know.

The ones that catch people out

Plenty of countries do not have the capital you would guess. Australia’s is Canberra, not Sydney. Turkey’s is Ankara, not Istanbul. Brazil built Brasilia from scratch in 1960 to replace Rio de Janeiro, and Nigeria did much the same with Abuja in 1991. Switzerland’s Bern quietly beats the far better-known Zurich and Geneva.

A note on the trickier entries

A few countries genuinely have more than one capital. South Africa splits its functions between Pretoria, Cape Town and Bloemfontein; Bolivia between Sucre and La Paz. This quiz uses the administrative or constitutional seat in those cases, which is the answer most sources give.
